#loveLeesburg began as an annual event. We wanted to build the value of serving into the DNA of our church plant so we set aside one weekend out of the summer for service projects. Instead of gathering to worship as a church we would scatter to serve as a church. That first year we hosted a Back to School Block Party on Saturday providing school supplies for over 100 students. On Sunday morning we divided up into 3 Serve Teams that:
– visiting at a local nursing home
– landscaping at the Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter admin offices
– cleaning up trash and praying with people in one of our low-income housing areas
We have hosted 3 annual #loveLeesburg weekends expanding the scope and volume of what we do each year.
What has #loveLeesburg become?
It didn’t take long for #loveLeesburg to become more than annual event. It has saturated our church culture and has morphed into how we interact with the city God has placed us in on a daily basis. #loveLeesburg is our entire attitude towards local missions…
Picnics in the Park
This became a recurring outreach event this past summer. We rented out 1 of the 6 public pavilions in Leesburg every other weekend of the summer and hosted free cookouts for the community. We grilled hot dogs, provided drinks, setup the moon bounce, played games, and listened to music. It was a great way to get to know our neighbors and serve different communities each weekend.
Preparing and serving a community for Tree of Life Ministries here in Leesburg has become another go-to outreach our church loves to get involved with. Tree of Life hosts weekly ESL classes and provides a community meal before-hand, feeding 60-70 people weekly. We try to partner with them once a month to provide the meal for the students.
Our service projects are still the focus on our #loveLeesburg weekend. We are always on the lookout for these types of opportunities throughout the year. Our teams have picked up trash, visited nursing homes, assembled play ground equipment, painted, cleaned, landscaped at homes schools and businesses, provided water and bananas on the W&OD trail…pretty much anything we can think of to serve our city.
Vacation Bible School
Hosting multiple Vacation Bible Schools each summer is one of our favorite things to do. We have had several mission teams from out-of-town and out-of-state partner with us to minister to the kids in our communities through these week-long day camp experiences. We typically celebrate the week with their families by hosting a community block party.
